I just can’t help myself. Its is not uncommon for me to read a few books a month with many many more waiting for me. One reason is because I belong to two book club groups and one of them I happen to be leading this year.
My book reading hobby has been an expense in the past, especially since I love a real hardcover book, and those are not cheap. After buying my first house, having a few children, and running out of bookshelf space I have changed my ways. There are plenty of ways to buy books on the cheap, here are some ways to get books free.
- Trusty Library – This is so obvious, but I have so many friends who do not set foot in their their public library because they do not realize how modern it has become since our college days. Most library’s will even offer inter-library loans so you are not waiting in line for your library’s only copy of A Fine Balance. You can save yourself a phone call or trip and check their internet catalog first to see what is available and even put it on hold. Don’t have a local library to use? Check out your local community college, they are usually more than willing to set you up with one.
- OverDrive – Just last year I started using Overdrive.com when I was desperate to get a book for book club that was checked out of every library in a 30 mile radius. Connected to your library you can log into this app for free and start searching titles and authors names. If the book you want is “in stock” you can check it out right there and read if from your tablet, ipad, or any other mobile device. You can also put a book on hold so that when it comes available you get an email. Books are even available in audio format for those long car or train rides to work.
- eBook Sites– I recently heard of the site getfreeebooks.com that offers a great selection of free books and you do not need a library card. You you may not necessarily find exactly the title you are looking for, but there are plenty to choose from. If you happen to have a Kindle check out amazon.com for free popular classic books. Did you know barnesandnoble.com also has books free for your nook? Last time I checked there were over one million to choose from! It might inspire you to buy a nook if you haven’t already.
- Book Trees – This is BIG with book clubs, but you will hear them called many things such as book swaps and book shares. Many people buy books, and are willing to share them too. In the past when I was buying my books more often, I would let my friends know when I was done so they could read them too. Its a nice way to give back and make sure your fellow book worms are well read in time for your monthly book discussion night.
- Samples – This takes a little work, but if you are serious about getting free books you can also contact the publisher when new books come out. Sometimes they will send you a copy for free as long as you are willing to give them feedback. I have been able to get a few free books at conferences or by going to the author’s site and lucking out with giveaways. Its possible, people. You can also find yourself scoring a free sample on Goodreads.com. If you are an avid reader you need to check out this website for book reviews, up to date information on new books, author interviews, and yes- the occasional free book!
