Being a corporate warrior princess (a.k.a. employee) requires me to take continued education. Recently at a women in leadership training course we read and discussed a book that I quickly realized would be a valuable read for everyone. Yes, everyone.
From full-time student to full-time employee one of the main areas of growth for me was overcoming my weakness. For example, I have had assertiveness as one of my areas of top focus throughout my career. I have often heard that I’m “just too nice” or that I “need to be more aggressive in negotiations”. These are constructive criticisms that I really do appreciate and makes me better understand some of my areas of opportunity. However… What if you were told that you had to focus MORE attention to what your strengths and build upon those instead?
Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath is exact to its title, it is a book that leads you directly to what your strengths are in order for you (and your team) to capitalize on it. Read the short prologue and then take the 30 minute quiz that will provide your 5 top strengths. Easy, right?
Maybe Strengths Finder 2.0 is an unusual choice for book club, but you’d be surprised by the discussions it will generate.
Strengths Finder 2.0 book club discussion questions:
- Go around the room and tell the group what was your most surprising strength you got from the quiz?
- Did you ever find that some of the questions were difficult to answer? Do you remember which ones?
- Now knowing what your strengths are, do you better understand your compatibility or (lack there of) with some of your close relationships?
- If you read through all 34 strengths outlined in the book did you find one that you were particular gravitated too
- Do you know anyone who you feel has that strength in your life or in the media?
- Have you ever been told in your life that one of your strengths was a weakness?
- Do you think your strengths have evolved since you a child?
- Do you have a strength (identified by the book or not) that you are particularly proud of?
- Did you enjoy the book? What you feel are the benefits of Strengths Finder 2.0 and the potential drawbacks?
- Do you feel there is a strength that was left off of the list of 34?
